3Nice mouse, not-so-great software
By Hyun Yu
I wanted a wireless mouse with a nano receiver for my new laptop. Having blown a lot of money on the said laptop, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a mouse. This HP Wireless Comfort Mobile mouse looked good--nano receiver, two extra buttons on the sides of the mouse, and cost about $15-20 less than those from Microsoft or Logitech. I wanted to test one in person before buying it, but none of the stores around here carried the HP line of mice, so I bought one sight unseen from Amazon.

The mouse itself is pretty good. The form factor is consistent as other "laptop" mice--small and comfortable. The scroll wheel is a bit stiffer and thus takes more effort to roll than the mice I have used from Microsoft or Logitech, but not in a bad way. One nice feature is that you can side-scroll left or right with the scroll wheel button. Whereas some higher-end mice you can use the horizontal axis of the scroll wheel button to program two additional "clicking" functions, on this HP mouse you can only scroll. It came with an Energizer battery with a power-interrupting strip of plastic over one of the battery terminals. The mouse feels good in the hand, although the side buttons (one on each side) are much easier to access for those who "palm" the mouse (the whole hand rests over the mouse) than those who "claw" the mouse (index and middle fingers over the left and right buttons, thumb on the side). The mouse is symmetrical for both right and left handed users. It uses invisible "laser" (infrared?) to track motion, not the red LED light.

So the mouse itself is pretty good. Where this product fails to shine is the bundled software. The package states it supports Windows XP and Vista. I have Windows 7. So I didn't expect it to necessarily work right out of the box, and it didn't. Downloading the latest mouse driver from the HP site took care of the issue. One warning for Windows 7 users: If you've already installed the driver from the CD that came with the mouse, then when you download latest driver and try to install it, you'll get a message saying that the latest driver is already installed, do you still want to install this one? YES you do--it'll update the software from something like 10.0.1 to 10.0.2, and that's what recognized the mouse on my Windows 7 laptop.

Did I mention that the software is less than satisfactory. After you've gotten the computer and the mouse to talk, and everything is working fine, launching the HP Mouse Driver app will ALWAYS result in an error message saying, "Mouse Not Detected!" Very annoying. However, the HP app will show up in the task bar as a mouse icon, and you can access the mouse properties there to customize the buttons, etc. It would've been very nice if I could assign keyboard strokes to the two side buttons (since I do a lot of tabbed browsing, it'd been nice to assign "open in new tab" and "close current tab" keystrokes to those buttons. But no. You can only assign a limited Windows functions to the two side buttons--launch Windows Explorer, run Calculator, run Microsoft Word, etc. You can assign the scroll-wheel button functionality to one of the buttons, which will do the "open in a new tab" function.

One critical omission of the driver software: There is no setting to control how fast the cursor moves across the screen! That seems like such a basic feature to be missing.

All in all, I'm happy enough with the mouse itself. The software leaves a lot to be desired, as does the HP support website. But, for the price, it's a good value for those looking for an affordable wireless mouse with a nano receiver.

4Very nice
By Edward A. Webb
Got this as a gift and was very pleased when it arrives (as was the recipient). The mouse is a good size, even for larger hands. The usb dongle is very small,a nd stays out of the way. it also can be stuck inside the battery compartment during transport.

Bottom Line: I would recommend this to a friend.

4Perfect Fit
By Stephanie Vasquez
I love my HP Wireless Comfort Mobile Mouse. It's moonlight white and perfectly matches my HP laptop. Amazon was the only place that had this in stock and was less than $45. I tried with eCOST but the whole thing was a mess with back order this and that. Anyway, mouse is perfect size, intuitive, and responsive to movement (I use for photoshop).
