powerful, loaded with high-end hardware, but track pad needs work
By D. F. Watt
Pros:
1) powerful hardware, great screen, Blu-ray, etc.
2) reasonable weight for 17.3 inch desktop replacement system.
3) Windows 7 versus Windows XP.
4) decent sound system, and great picture when playing back Blu-ray discs - good entertainment laptop.
5) not too much bloatware relative to some other HP products.
6) superfast (with Crucial SSD drive - much cheaper to install it yourself after-market) - loads Windows in 15-20 seconds, and most programs almost instantly.
7) attractive appearance and presentation, decent keyboard (backlit).
8) decent job with the improved management of heat, which plagued the Envy 15 series.
9) good enough video card capability for serious gaming
Cons:
1) tricky trackpad - it's supposed to work similar to a Mac trackpad with two finger scrolling etc., but that's not the case. Much improved with non-HP software (why doesn't HP have it?), but still tricky to use.
2) Windows 7 versus Windows XP - lots of eye candy but still a buggy OS
3) less than stellar battery life (even with solid-state drive). About 1.5 hours on standard 6-cell battery under minimal load.
4) 7.5 pounds - not the most portable laptop.
5) HP's legendary bad service (fortunately haven't needed them yet)
6) difficulties cloning Windows 7 system partitions
7) poor reliability of HP blu-ray software - frequent lock ups
This is a substantially revised review, after three months with the machine.
After a long period of review and analysis of sources on the Internet about desktop replacement systems, I came to the conclusion that of all the desktop replacement systems, the Envy 17 was probably the most powerful system for the money out there, although it was a close contest relative to the F series Sony laptop, which also is an appealing system.
I was able to get a fire-sale price on a fairly loaded new Envy. I deliberately avoided the i7 quad core processor because of the heat issues (glad I did, and the system doesn't really get that hot). I got a reasonably fast i5, both to get better battery life and less heat. Additionally, it is a big (and common) mistake to think that a faster processor is really going to make a difference compared to a much faster SSD drive - save money on the getting the cheaper CPU and spend it instead on the SSD. Heat is a primary concern, more in relationship to people doing gaming, because the video card does contribute significantly to the heat output (the CPU and GPU seem to share a common heat sink). Unfortunately, there is no option to switch between less energy intensive motherboard graphics, and a dedicated video card when you need the extra processing power, a feature that Apple has exploited with significant returns on battery life.
The biggest source of frustration unquestionably is the trackpad, which is almost unusable (with stock HP software) at least by anyone with average dexterity. If you're willing to get an outboard mouse, it's a lot better, but of course that means you can't have this system on your lap anymore because it's tough to manipulate a mouse under those circumstances.
One frustrating scenario was that initially, despite using literally four different disk copying programs, I was unable to clone the system partition to a solid-state drive. Kept getting a strange error code, as though the system couldn't find the boot partition. Fortunately, I was finally able to track down the error code, and it turns out there is a ready fix - but only if you know how to use the repair functionality within the Windows install disk - how does Microsoft manage to make the simplest things such a freaking hassle and sell so many copies of their OS?.
With all the hassles, I initially struggled to decide between three versus four stars, and finally settled on four. After getting the trackpad software sorted out, and appreciating how fast this system really is (due to the SSD), it is now between a four and five star system. However, I think the bottom line is that the Envy 17 is just short of being a truly great system - If they fixed the heating issues, and battery life issues (both would improve with the addition of a motherboard graphics chip that could do most of the work and take the load off of the GPU), they would have an Apple-beater. Apple's MacBook Pro 17 unibody still looks overall like the better system - just twice the money, and still no blu-ray because of Apple's endless bickering with third parties. Tough choice, given Apple's much better service and more stable OS. But at least it's a choice and not a slam dunk for Apple. I'm glad at this point that I chose this system. I just wish Windows 7 was as stable as advertised. Still buggy and crash prone. Been there and done that.

Powerful, BUT...
By Alex
Pros:
1) power
2) price
3) weight (for a 17" model - perfect)
4) exterior
Cons:
1) Weird keyboard layout. Arrow buttons are too small, "home" and "end" are placed very unusual... You will HAVE to relearn your habbits. Envy-15 keyboard is actually better. Hint: turn on the numlock (programmatically) and use the keypad
2) Heat. After playing an hour of my favorite 3d-shooter my left hand aches.
3) Display sucks compared to my old VAIO and to Macbook Pro. Black is not that deep, angles are poor, brightness/contrast suck.
